ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY DIVISION

ESSE’s Environmental Health & Safety Division is located in the GTA region, supported by the home office in Brantford, Ontario.  We offer a vast array of services to meet your needs and objectives.

(A) HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

In Ontario, designated substances are governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and specific regulations are made under the Act for each substance.  The services offered by ESSE Environmental address the needs and regulatory requirements of our clients from both a construction and a manufacturing perspective.

Under the Act, a Designated Substance survey of building materials must be performed prior to renovation or demolition.  Further, where any of the Designated Substances are used in a manufacturing process, a control program is needed if an assessment determines that worker exposure is likely and that health of the worker may be affected.

(B) ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT

Asbestos was widely used in the construction of buildings prior to the early 1980’s.  However, some forms of asbestos are still used in modern construction materials to this day.  The fire retarding, thermal, and weaving properties of the asbestos fibres made them an ingredient of choice in various building materials.

In recent times the health effects associated with exposure to asbestos fibres have become evident and governments have introduced regulations to protect workers from exposure to asbestos.

ESSE Environmental has extensive experience in all areas of asbestos related consulting from performing asbestos surveys, inspection and air-monitoring to preparing asbestos abatement specification and project management services.

(C) MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION

One of the most common indoor air biological contaminants is microbial contamination, which is largely attributed to fungal growth or bacteria on building materials.  Some building materials such as Gypsum Board, Wood, Plywood, Roof sheathing, Acoustic ceiling tiles and Oriented Strand Board are very susceptible to mould growth due to their intrinsic properties.  Other non-building related materials can also be source for concern including; boxes, papers, books, fabrics, garments, etc.  These materials are present within most indoor environments including offices, schools, residential high-rises and single family homes.

The presence of microbial contamination (i.e. fungi, bacterial, etc.) in a building can present a potential health hazard to occupants of the building or to construction workers during renovation or demolition. Microbial contamination, although not specifically regulated, is a topic that is seriously addressed by most regulatory bodies and routinely enforced by Health Departments and Ministries of Labour.
